Xero announces Aussie expansion

A New Zealand-based enterprise software supplier has announced that it is to expand its services into the Australian market.

Xero, which predominately targets small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), has set up an office in Melbourne and has begun a recruitment campaign to hire around 30 staff.

Intending to establish a presence in most of the country's major cities, the online accountancy specialist also disclosed that it is seeking to increase its partners in Australia from its current figure of 20 to several hundred.

Rod Drury, chief executive of Xero, claimed that SMBs in Australia are an important part of the economy.

He said: "This seems to be the year where telecommunications providers start rolling out sophisticated services to small businesses."

Earlier this month, Xero announced that it had signed an agreement with Telstra that allows the application developer to offer its flagship product as part of the company's T-Suite solution, which is a software-as-a-service model.
