Software-as-a-service offering to be trialled by NSW tax office
May 6 2010, 23:06 PM
A software-as-a-service offering is being trialled by an Australian state agency.
The New South Wales (NSW) Office of State Revenue (OSR) is testing whether hosted email services will prove to be more effective to the organisation than its previous internal system.
Speaking to IT News, David Kennedy, chief information officer for the NSW OSR, said that if the software-as-a-service offering proves to be successful it may be rolled out to other state departments.
"There has been a lot of interest in this across the government," he said.
"Inevitably, [cloud computing] will happen more broadly, as the NSW government moves down the road of a shared services model."
Last month, David Smith, the vice chairman of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation technology sector group, told the Recruiter website that using software-as-a-service and cloud computing offerings gives organisations the opportunity to cut costs.
He said one area in which savings will be made is the purchase of IT infrastructure such as servers.
