Small businesses 'don't have the tools for ecommerce'

Apr 18 2012, 17:18 PM

Small businesses in Australia are struggling to gather the skills and resources they need to make an impact on ecommerce.

Speaking to Power Retail, Heath Michael, policy director of the Australian Retailers Association, said that there is a real opportunity for businesses to take advantage of online shopping, if they have the right tools, especially as the National Broadband Network (NBN) develops.

“Regional retailers want to reach the global market through the NBN but they lack the knowledge on how to do that,” Michael said.

“We are working with companies such as eBay to encourage retailers to use their e-commerce platform.”

He said that the biggest challenges preventing retailers from getting online are the cost of running a website, the cost of hiring a web developer to make the site usable and attractive and the competition they face from international retailers.

However, businesses are advised to try and find a way around these problems as online shopping is becoming increasingly popular in Australia and businesses which aren't online risk getting left behind.
