Recession 'good time' for IT investment

- Nov 19 2008, 22:32 PM

Investing in IT when the economy is close to recession will help business prepare for the upturn, according to a panel of IT experts.

Speaking to The Age, SAP suggested that a period of economic concern is a good time to analyse costs using business intelligence software, as firms can discover specific areas of their organisation that are underperforming.

In addition, SAP's Peter Sertori, claimed that a slowing economy creates more opportunities for companies "to move to a leadership position than at any time in the business cycle".

However, Neil McMurchy, research director at Gartner, told The Age that most companies have already invested in technology and are just unaware of how to "exploit them".

He said: "Take the time now to make your IT assets work harder for you. It's not costly, it just requires focus."

Last month, a survey by AFCOM disclosed that most companies expect their data budgets to increase or remain at the same level during 2009.
