Expert predicts ecommerce will win retail battle
May 10 2012, 19:58 PM
Across the globe high streets are suffering as a growing number of people head online to shop and one expert has suggested that whatever tactics conventional retailers deploy, ecommerce will win the overall battle for customers.
Tim Gibbon, director at communications consultancy Elemental, said that the convenience and low costs offered by online shopping will continue to attract increasing numbers of customers.
"Although there are steps to reinvigorate the high street, change the way businesses pay rent et cetera, it may be too late for many and e-retail may offer certain businesses a better way to reach their audiences without such large overheads. It’s a win for the web, not for the high street," he commented.
Mr Gibbon added that the biggest draw of ecommerce is that it lets people search out the best deals and keep control of their spending, something which has never been more important as customers look to tighten their belts.
The expert's comments come as data from AMP Capital Shopping Centres shows that ecommerce in Australia will peak at 15 per cent.
