Ecommerce 'the best way to overcome the downturn'
Jan 3 2012, 22:44 PM
Embracing ecommerce is the best way for retailers to overcome the current economic downturn, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australia Post chief executive, Ahmed Fahour said that investment in the nation's digital infrastructure is essential to help the wider economy.
''What we need to do is lay out the infrastructure to enable e-commerce, e-communication, e-retailing to really take off, because we're still half the rate of the rest of the world,'' he said.
''We live in a society where people are so, so busy and the days of mum staying at home to wait for the postie to deliver, if those days really existed in the recent past, they're gone.''
He added that the national broadband network will help make the shift towards the digital economy.
The popularity of online shopping in Australia was demonstrated in the run up to Christmas when record numbers of people logged on to make purchases.
