Data security 'essential for Australian companies'
Jan 16 2012, 16:47 PM
Good data security and data management is essential for Australian companies as they lag behind their UK and US counterparts in terms of protecting themselves against hackers, it has been claimed.
Dimension Data subsidiary, Security-Assessment has warned that while in the US and UK companies are required by law to disclose data breaches, no such legislation exists in Australia.
Roger Greyling, a security consultant with Security-Assessment.com, told IT Wire: "Currently the focus is on the clean-up of data security breaches rather than prevention. There has been no impetus for businesses to reveal data exposures and minimal fines imposed, which means there is limited incentive for businesses to comply with the PCI DSS."
He added that big data breaches in recent years have highlighted how vulnerable companies are to cyber criminals.
"There is a growing danger that Australasian companies will be seen as soft targets," Mr Greyling continued.
With recent studies showing that the amount of data companies have responsibility for is to grow massively in the coming years, data security has never been more important.
