Data migrations 'need to involve businesses'
Nov 19 2009, 22:55 PM
Data migrations are more likely to be a success if companies are properly involved in the process, it has been suggested.
An article in Marketing Week stated that if vendors need to be in touch with the specific needs of a client to avoid the danger of incorrect data-modelling.
KPMG advisory partner Steve Gallagher, who has worked on several major data migration projects, said that it was vital that businesses knew what data was necessary for its needs before undertaking any integration work.
"If business doesn't take responsibility for the data, it can't expect anybody else to work out the meaning of fields and how variables should be matched," he stated.
Mr Gallagher went on to add that successful data migrations gave companies more accurate information and therefore help different parts of an organisation become more productive.
In a recent article for E-Commerce Times, IT consultant Ashish Nadkarni said that "data migrations are something no one can avoid" due to the rapid rate at which hardware and software becomes outdated.
