Data management software 'must be secure'

Jul 13 2009, 00:10 AM

While the efficient gathering and storage of data plays a vital role in modern business, failing to secure data management software can lead to major problems.

That is the central message due to be addressed at the upcoming Security 2009 event in Australia, which will see dozens of the world's top data management experts come together to advise on how best to keep sensitive information safe from both hackers and accidental damage.

According to Craig Scroggie, chairman of the Storage Networking Industry Association of Australia and New Zealand, computer security is becoming increasingly important to businesses as the tactics used by online criminals continue to evolve.

"The global financial crisis has seen criminals take advantage of the panic and fear among consumers and increase targeted phishing and spam attacks, resulting in a rise in ID theft and fraud schemes," he warned, according to etbmice.com.

Security 2009, which will take place in Sydney between August 24th and 26th, will also focus on issues such as risk management and biometrics.

At the end of June, Oracle advised that data security is set to become an increasingly pressing matter for investors, with companies that fail to take the necessary steps to protect their information likely to be left behind their competitors.
