Data centre spending to reach AUS$96 billion this year - Gartner
Oct 17 2011, 17:08 PM
Global spending on database management hardware is set to reach AUS$96 billion in 2011, according to research by Gartner.
This is up from AUD$86 billion last year and is driven by the declining influence of in-house data centres, the analyst said.
Over the coming years, spending on data hardware – which inclusing servers, storage and data centre equipment – is set to increase further still, hitting AUS$103 billion in 2012, and surpassing AUS$123 billion in 2015.
"Worldwide data centre hardware spending will finally reach and surpass 2008 levels," said Jon Hardcastle, research director at Gartner.
He added that traditional in-house enterprise centres are "under attack" from three sides – the popularity of virutalisation technologies, more efficient data centres and a move to third-party data centres as a way to consolidate. "Meanwhile, the largest data centre class is, of course, benefiting from the rise of cloud computing," Mr Hardcastle added.
