Big data 'can cause security threats'

Big data offers companies a lot of opportunities but brings with it a number of security threats, meaning good data management is a must.
This is the opinion of the Information Security Forum global vice president Steve Durbin who said that big data needs to be stored properly and businesses should also be sure that they know where it came from.
Speaking to Arnet, he pointed to the example of Megaupload which had to close down recently leaving many people not knowing where their data is and who has access to it.
“No business wants to be in that kind of position, but I think the biggest issue with big data is really about the use of it, as that’s where it becomes a bit of a minefield depending on which jurisdiction you are operating in,” he said.
By this Mr Durbin is referring to the fact that businesses in Australia who store data in Europe must abide by EU statutes.
Although there are some precautions to be taken when it comes to big data, it can be worth it for companies as it can help them get to know their customer and ensure that all products and marketing campaigns are carefully targeted.
