Australians embrace SMS messaging
Jun 22 2009, 23:17 PM
SMS messaging is now one of the most popular means of communication in Australia, a new poll has found.
According to research from Telstra, more than one in three Australian nationals send between three and seven text messages every day.
Respondents said they are willing to text others in a variety of locations, including a cinema, a business meeting or even an occasion such as funeral or wedding.
Telstra said this demonstrates that Australians are "text crazy", as SMS is now their favoured means of communication.
The findings may be of interest to direct marketers, as they suggest that adding mobile phone numbers to their database management systems could help them to engage with the public directly.
Indeed, the Internet Advertising Bureau recently stated that the potential for expansion in the mobile marketing sector over the next few years is "huge".
Glenice Maclellan, consumer executive director at Telstra, added: "Texting has become an indispensable part of our everyday lives."
